Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide focused 1:1 labor and delivery care, including fetal monitoring and labor coaching
- Deliver peri-operative and post-C-section nursing care from recovery through discharge
- Perform thorough nursing assessments and document findings using PIER/SOAPE charting
- Stabilize high-risk maternal and neonatal patients and coordinate transfers to tertiary care when needed
- Administer medications and therapeutics safely and accurately, following standards of care
- Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, including trauma and fetal distress situations
- Supervise and delegate tasks to CNAs, LPNs, and support staff to maintain safe patient care
- Educate patients and families on postpartum care, breastfeeding, discharge plans, and follow-up
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska required (or applied for prior to start for direct hire)
- Agency staff must hold an active Alaska RN license prior to start
- BLS required on hire; ACLS must be completed within first 6 months and recertified biannually
- NRP and PALS certifications required (or obtained within policy timeframes if not on hire)
- One year clinical nursing experience preferred; prior OB/Labor & Delivery experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency in electronic fetal monitoring using NICHD terminology
- Strong clinical judgment, triage skills, and emergency response capability
- Medication administration, infection control, and perioperative/post-surgical care
- Experience with newborn care, breastfeeding support, and well-baby checks
- Effective documentation, communication, and interdisciplinary coordination
- Familiarity with defibrillators, EKG monitoring, suction equipment, and standard OB equipment
