Roles & Responsibilities
- Collect and accurately document patient information and maintain organized charts in the EMR
- Obtain vital signs, perform point-of-care testing (POCT) and collect specimens per protocol
- Prepare patients and assist providers with routine exams, minor procedures and radiology when competent
- Administer immunizations and injections as ordered and help identify patients overdue for preventive care
- Operate and maintain medical equipment including EKG machines and cardiac monitors
- Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition, reporting incidents and safety concerns promptly
- Provide excellent patient support and transport patients within the facility as needed
- Participate in cross-coverage, staff meetings and unit goal-setting to improve clinic operations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR EMT III OR current AK Paramedic Certification OR Nursing Degree from an accredited institution
- Experience in a healthcare setting preferred
- Proven ability to perform specimen collection, POCT, immunizations, EKGs and basic radiology support
- Comfortable using EMR systems and other computer applications; good documentation skills
- Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to train and collaborate with the team
Education
- High school diploma or GED required; CMA/EMT III/AK Paramedic Certification or Nursing Degree accepted
Knowledge & Skills
- Patient care and patient charting/documentation
- Vital signs, specimen collection and point-of-care testing (POCT)
- Immunizations and injections
- Electrocardiogram (EKG) operation and basic cardiac monitoring
- Radiology support per protocol (with demonstrated competency)
- EMR usage and general medical database proficiency
- Medical terminology, customer service and effective communication
- Ability to operate medical equipment (BP cuff, pulse oximeter, defibrillator) and assist providers
