Roles & Responsibilities
- Scrub for operative procedures in Labor & Delivery, partnering closely with the surgeon and RN to maximize patient safety
- Prepare and verify case carts according to preference cards and ensure instrumentation is complete
- Recognize and interpret preference cards to procure the correct instruments and supplies
- Coordinate communication between the operating room and sterile processing to ensure smooth instrument flow throughout the day
- Review the daily surgical schedule with the charge nurse and SPD coordinator to anticipate turnover and scheduling issues
- Manage core OR communications, delegate tasks, and coordinate breaks and lunches to maintain coverage
- Serve as a resource for SPD and Surgical Services for supply and instrumentation needs for scheduled and unscheduled cases
- Liaise with materials management regarding supply utilization and deployment to support safe, efficient care
- Maintain required education and training per DNV and facility policy to remain compliant and skilled
- Exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, and deliver patient-centered care in high-pressure situations
Qualifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) — required
- American Heart Association BLS — required
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or equivalent military surgical technologist program — required
- High school diploma or equivalent — required
- Preferred: 1 year surgical technologist experience in an acute care operating room (especially L&D experience a plus)
- Ability to work varied shifts, respond on-call, and work beyond a standard 40-hour week when needed
- Strong emotional intelligence, teamwork, communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program (or military surgical technologist program equivalent)
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in surgical technique, human anatomy, and common surgical procedures
- Instrument handling, sterile technique, and sterile field maintenance
- Case cart completion and accurate use of preference cards
- Clear communication with OR staff, charge nurses, SPD, and materials management
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a busy, high-stress environment while maintaining professionalism
- Tact, discretion, confidentiality, and sound clinical judgment
- Physical stamina for standing, lifting, bending, and fine-finger movements during procedures
- Familiarity with bloodborne pathogen precautions, radiation safety basics, and handling of clinical chemicals/medications
