Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate direct patient care to individuals with mental health needs
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including grooming and mobility support
• Monitor, record, and report vital signs and behavioral observations to the clinical team
• Support implementation of mental health treatment plans and follow clinical direction
• Maintain accurate, timely documentation while protecting patient privacy
• Use safe de-escalation techniques and follow safety protocols in a secure environment
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary and custody staff to ensure coordinated care
• Participate in orientation and ongoing training to keep skills sharp

Qualifications

• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or Medical Assistant (MA) certification
• Comfortable working in a correctional facility setting (PBSP - Pelican Bay State Prison)
• Availability for Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM and completion of a two-week orientation
• Experience or strong interest in mental health care and supporting patients with dignity
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work well on a team

Education

• CNA certification or MA certification required

Knowledge & Skills

• Fundamentals of patient care and assistance with activities of daily living
• Vital signs measurement and basic clinical observation
• Documentation best practices and confidentiality (HIPAA awareness)
• De-escalation and safety techniques appropriate for a correctional environment
• Teamwork, clear communication, and adaptability when schedules or needs change
• Basic understanding of mental health conditions and supportive care approaches
