Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations and refractions with care and accuracy
- Diagnose and manage common ocular conditions and make timely referrals when needed
- Fit and educate patients on contact lenses and spectacle prescriptions
- Document clinical findings and treatment plans thoroughly in the electronic health record
- Collaborate with correctional facility medical staff to coordinate patient care and follow-up
- Maintain infection control, safety protocols and professional standards in a secure setting
- Provide patient education in a clear, compassionate manner to improve outcomes
Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree required
- Active California optometrist license or ability to obtain state licensure prior to start
- Clinical experience in optometry; experience in correctional or institutional settings is a plus
- Ability to pass a background check and obtain necessary facility clearances
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations
Education
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) or equivalent professional optometry degree
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency in refraction, slit lamp exam and ocular health assessment
- Experience with contact lens fitting and spectacle prescribing
- Familiarity with ocular disease management and appropriate referral practices
- Comfortable documenting in electronic health records
- Good clinical judgment, attention to detail and strong patient communication
- Ability to work independently and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team
