Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, expert nursing care to pediatric cardiac step-down patients, managing complex post-op and cardiac conditions
• Monitor telemetry and interpret dysrhythmias to rapidly identify and escalate changes in cardiac status
• Manage invasive lines and devices including arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes and high-flow nasal cannula
• Administer and monitor blood products, TPN/lipids, and critical cardiac medications safely and accurately
• Perform and document assessments, interventions and patient education using Epic with clear, timely charting
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (respiratory, pharmacy, PT, social work) to create and execute individualized care plans
• Participate in rapid response/PEWS and be ready to act decisively during pediatric emergencies
• Float to other UCSF units as needed, bringing a team-first attitude and adaptability

Qualifications

• Active California RN license (required)
• AHA BLS and PALS certifications (required)
• Minimum 2 years experience in pediatric cardiac transitional care / step-down (required)
• PICU experience strongly preferred
• Familiarity with Epic electronic health record (required)
• Willingness and ability to float to other UCSF units and facilities
• Ability to work rotating 12-hour day or night shifts and every-other-weekend coverage
• COVID-19 vaccine and booster required per facility guidelines (medical/religious exemptions only)

Knowledge & Skills

• Telemetry monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Arterial line and central line care and blood draws
• Management of chest tubes and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
• IV therapy, phlebotomy, starting and maintaining IVs
• Administration of blood products and TPN/lipids
• NG tube insertion and gastric tube management
• Pediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) and rapid response protocols
• Infection control practices and PPE compliance
• Experience caring for congenital heart disease, post-cardiac surgery and post-catheterization patients
• Comfort working in a fast-paced teaching hospital environment and using Epic
