Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality adult cardiothoracic surgical care, including pre-op evaluation, operative management, and post-op follow-up
- Perform required procedures such as CABG, valve repair/replacement, lung resections, pneumonectomy, thoracotomy procedures, and mediastinal surgery
- Cover weekend night call (beeper/telephonic and in-person coverage as needed) and handle emergent consultations
- Round on hospitalized patients during assigned on-site weeks to ensure continuity of care and timely disposition
- Coordinate with anesthesia, ICU, nursing, and OR teams to optimize perioperative workflows and patient safety
- Document thoroughly in Epic and communicate treatment plans clearly to patients, families, and colleagues
Qualifications
- MD or DO with completion of residency and fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery or equivalent surgical training
- Board certified or board eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery (or relevant surgical specialty)
- Current or the ability to obtain an active Michigan medical license in a timely manner
- Proven OR experience in cardiothoracic cases and comfort with a broad range of thoracic procedures
- Experience using Epic EMR for documentation and order entry
- Comfort with hospital-based practice, on-site rounding, and night/weekend call coverage
- Ability to complete credentialing process (credentialing timeframe approximately 90 days)
Education
- MD or DO degree
- Completed residency and fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of adult cardiac and general thoracic surgical procedures
- Strong perioperative and critical care skills for complex surgical patients
- Proficiency with Epic for clinical documentation and coordination of care
- Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
- Ability to manage emergency consultations and operate efficiently in Level I trauma environment
- Effective decision-making under pressure during night and weekend coverage
