Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality postpartum nursing care to birthing patients and their newborns, promoting family-centered care and positive outcomes
• Perform thorough newborn assessments, cord care, metabolic screens, and discharge teaching to parents
• Start and maintain IVs, administer medications (including blood products) and manage IV therapy safely
• Monitor cardiac rhythms and interpret telemetry; be prepared to pass an EKG competency prior to start
• Support breastfeeding through instruction and assistance with pumps and lactation basics
• Manage postpartum procedures including bladder assessment/foley insertion, fundus/lochia checks, and incision/episiotomy care
• Recognize and respond to postpartum complications such as hemorrhage and preeclampsia with timely interventions and escalation
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (IV teams, pharmacy, PT, social work, rapid response) to coordinate comprehensive patient care

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years postpartum nursing experience (strong like experience considered)
• Current RN license (state-appropriate) and BLS required
• IV certification and proven IV start skills
• Labor & Delivery (L&D) experience preferred and helpful for couplet care
• EPIC documentation experience required
• NRP preferred
• Flu vaccine required (medical exemptions only); COVID-19 vaccine not required per facility guideline
• Ability to float to other units within the OSU organization as needed

Knowledge & Skills

• Postpartum and newborn care including thermoregulation, cord care, and newborn hypoglycemia recognition
• Couplet care: caring for mother and infant together
• Telemetry interpretation and cardiac monitoring (EKG competency required)
• Administration of medications including heparin, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate, pitocin, and blood products
• Management of NAS infants, phototherapy, and newborn metabolic screening
• Breastfeeding instruction and use of electric/manual breast pumps
• Experience with EPIC charting and electronic medical records
• Patient education and discharge teaching for parents
