Roles & Responsibilities

• Initiate, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilation and life support systems for critically ill patients
• Perform emergency airway management including endotracheal intubation and provide continuous airway maintenance
• Obtain and interpret arterial blood gases (ABGs) and make ventilator adjustments in consultation with physicians
• Administer age-appropriate respiratory treatments including nebulizer therapy and chest physiotherapy
• Provide tracheostomy and endotracheal tube care, suctioning, and routine airway maintenance
• Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ventilate patients during transfers
• Conduct pulmonary function testing and operate pulse oximetry for diagnostic and monitoring purposes
• Deliver patient and family education on respiratory care, aerosol treatments, breathing exercises, and oxygen conservation
• Perform EEG electrode placement and assist with polysomnography/sleep studies when assigned
• Maintain and perform basic upkeep of respiratory equipment, adhere to infection control, and keep work areas safe and organized

Qualifications

• Hawaii Respiratory Therapist License required — travelers must have Hawaii licensure before start
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) recognized by the NBRC is preferred
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required
• Clinical experience with neonatal, pediatric, and critical care patients strongly preferred
• Comfortable working independently and exercising clinical judgment under physicians' orders
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Ability to perform arterial punctures for blood gas analysis and operate advanced respiratory equipment

Education

• RRT or CRT preferred (National Board for Respiratory Care certification)
• Hawaii Respiratory Therapist License required
