Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist in transporting and positioning patients safely and respectfully for procedures
• Prepare the operating room by opening sterile supplies and setting up instruments
• Maintain the sterile field and assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, and passing instruments
• Perform accurate counts of instruments, sutures, and sponges to ensure patient safety
• Collect, identify, and care for surgical specimens according to protocol
• Decontaminate and handle instruments and equipment per established policies
• Efficiently turnover the operating room to support smooth surgical schedules
• Apply dressings and support post-procedure patient needs with professionalism

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) via NBSTSA or NCCT preferred
• Non-certified candidates considered with graduation from an OR technician program, documented on-the-job training, or military medical/technician experience
• Minimum of 6 months technical experience or specialized training for non-certified applicants
• Ability to work a rotating schedule and participate in on-call coverage (weeknight and weekend requirements)
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with surgical teams

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent
• OR technician program graduate (preferred) or documented on-the-job/military training

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and surgical draping
• Familiarity with surgical instruments and instrument passing
• Patient positioning and prep for surgery
• Instrument counts and specimen handling
• Room setup, turnover, and instrument decontamination
• Ability to assist surgeons with gowning and gloving
• Basic understanding of operating room safety and infection control
