Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform thorough pre-op assessments and prepare patients for surgery with clear education and medication reconciliation
- Manage Phase II recovery and safely discharge patients home with concise discharge instructions
- Monitor cardiac rhythms and recognize/manage dysrhythmias using bedside cardiac monitoring
- Administer and manage narcotics/opioid analgesics and reversal agents as needed
- Document accurately and efficiently in Epic to ensure continuity of care
- Float within the surgical services line as required, contributing wherever your skills are needed
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the interdisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes
- Provide airway support and respiratory treatments including CPAP/BiPAP management when indicated
Qualifications
- Active RN license (WA or compact license honored at Swedish facilities)
- BLS required
- ACLS preferred
- EPIC charting experience required
- Travel experience required; unit does not accept first-time travelers
- Minimum perioperative experience: at least 1 year (2 years noted in some site guidance — bring your best surgical experience)
- Comfort with floating within surgical services and managing a 1:3 patient ratio on days
- Experience with pre-op assessment, Phase II recovery, and a variety of surgical cases (ENT, General, Gyn, Ophthalmology, Ortho, Urology)
Knowledge & Skills
- Pre/Post operative care and Phase II recovery workflows
- Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia recognition/management
- Familiarity with a wide range of surgery cases: ENT, General, Gyn, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Urology (and exposure to plastics, thoracic, robotics preferred)
- Types of anesthesia exposure: conscious sedation, MAC, general and local
- IV therapy: starting and maintaining IVs, phlebotomy
- Pain assessment & management and postoperative care including wound vacs and catheter care
- Modified Aldrete scoring for recovery readiness
- Breathing treatments and CPAP/BiPAP support
