Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist residents with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, and oral hygiene
• Provide basic nursing care such as taking and recording vital signs, weights, and intake/output
• Feed residents and measure food and liquid intake, ensuring dignity and comfort
• Collect routine specimens (stool, urine, sputum) and report findings to RN/LPN
• Perform safe patient handling tasks: positioning, lifting, turning, ambulation assistance, and bed/room prep
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of resident rooms and work areas following facility procedures
• Follow infection control, fire, safety, and hazardous material procedures consistently
• Communicate changes in resident condition or behavior promptly to licensed nursing staff
• Attend required inservices, meetings, and participate on nursing service committees when requested

Qualifications

• Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification through the South Dakota Board of Nursing (required)
• Demonstrated ability to perform medium to heavy lifting and safe patient transfers
• Strong observational skills and ability to accurately report changes to RN/LPN
• Comfort with infection control procedures and basic nursing care tasks
• Reliable attendance and flexibility for varied day and night shift coverage
• Willingness to attend required inservices and participate in facility committees

Education

• Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) — certification through the South Dakota Board of Nursing

Knowledge & Skills

• Patient care and activities of daily living (ADLs)
• Taking and recording vital signs, weights, and intake/output
• Specimen collection (stool, urine, sputum)
• Foley care, pericare, bathing, oral hygiene, and feeding assistance
• Positioning, lifting, turning, ambulation assistance, and use of assistive equipment
• Infection control and adherence to facility policies and procedures
• Clear verbal communication with residents, families, and healthcare team
• Basic reporting to RN/LPN and documentation practices
