Shift Type: Rotating shifts (day and night) including: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM; schedule is self-scheduled based on seniority with manager balancing; all days of week with every-other-weekend and every-other-holiday requirements

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to adolescents and adults on a locked inpatient psychiatric unit
• Use de-escalation techniques and strong communication to manage crisis situations and keep patients safe
• Perform thorough behavioral health assessments and document care clearly and promptly
• Implement and monitor seclusion and restraint protocols when clinically necessary and per policy
• Partner with mental health techs, occupational therapy, social work and RT to coordinate holistic patient care
• Participate in 15-minute rounds and be actively engaged in hands-on patient care throughout your shift
• Support unit safety systems (emergency buttons, code responses) and follow life-safety procedures
• Precept and orient travelers during the two 12-hour unit-specific orientation shifts

Qualifications

• Current RN license (must be eligible to practice in North Dakota)
• BLS certification required
• CPI certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
• Acute inpatient or state hospital psychiatric nursing experience required
• Comfort with adolescent and adult psychiatric populations; adolescent experience preferred
• Strong de-escalation and communication skills, patience, and ability to remain calm under pressure
• Willingness to float as needed and work collaboratively with unit leadership; travelers typically not expected to serve as charge nurse
• Candidates must comply with the facility radius rule and are not eligible if currently full-time/part-time/PRN with CommonSpirit/CHI/Dignity facilities; RTO requirement applies (see hiring team for details)

Knowledge & Skills

• Inpatient psychiatric nursing best practices and behavioral health assessment
• Patient de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
• Seclusion and mechanical restraint procedures and safe implementation
• Familiarity with CPAP/BiPAP and oxygen support protocols and working with RT
• Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including mental health techs, OT, social work
• Strong documentation skills and attention to safety rounds and monitoring
• Comfort working on a locked unit with mixed adolescent and adult populations
• Adaptability to both 12-hour and 8-hour shift models and unionized scheduling processes
