Roles & Responsibilities

• Process and embed tissue specimens accurately and efficiently to support timely diagnoses
• Perform manual rotary microtomy using Leica microtomes to produce high-quality sections
• Handle a high-volume workload, routinely working with 100+ blocks per night when needed
• Manage a full range of specimen types from tiny biopsies to large resections with care
• Operate tissue processing equipment and maintain logs to ensure traceability and quality
• Collaborate closely with pathologists and lab colleagues to prioritize cases and troubleshoot issues
• Follow laboratory safety, quality control, and documentation procedures consistently
• Assist with LIS duties and tracking using systems like Cerner, Vantage or Navify when applicable
• Maintain and perform basic maintenance on manual microtomes and lab instruments

Qualifications

• HT(ASCP) certification required
• HTL(ASCP) certification acceptable if HT(ASCP) not available
• Proven experience in histology/pathology lab workflows and high-volume embedding/microtomy
• Comfortable using manual Leica rotary microtomes
• Preferred experience with Cerner LIS and/or Roche Ventana systems and Vantage/Navify tracking
• Ability to handle a broad variety of specimen/tissue types found in an academic medical center
• BLS not required for this role

Education

• Certification: HT(ASCP) required; HTL(ASCP) accepted
• Completion of an accredited histotechnology program preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong knowledge of histology techniques: embedding, microtomy, tissue processing and staining basics
• Skilled in specimen/tissue handling and proper labeling/chain of custody
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality and reproducibility
• Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and digital tracking tools
• Good communication and teamwork skills in a multidisciplinary clinical setting
• Basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting for manual microtomes
