Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist in cardiothoracic surgical cases alongside attending physicians, providing skilled intraoperative support
• Perform required procedures such as central venous and dialysis catheter placement, arterial line insertion, and chest tube placements
• Participate in retrieval of vascular tissue for bypass conduit and endoscopic retrieval procedures
• Provide preoperative and postoperative patient assessment and management to ensure continuity of care
• Collaborate with the surgical team, anesthesia, and nursing staff to optimize patient safety and outcomes
• Respond to call and emergent situations as part of the rotational call coverage

Qualifications

• Certified by NCCPA (required)
• Active state medical license required prior to assignment (no pending licenses accepted)
• Minimum of 1 year of Cardiothoracic OR experience required; no new graduates
• Current ACLS & BLS through AHA (required)
• Proficiency with Epic EMR
• Comfortable working in an inpatient OR environment with adult patient population
• Willingness to participate in call rotation (1:4)

Education

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program
• NCCPA certification (board certification required)

Knowledge & Skills

• Cardiothoracic surgery and intraoperative assistance
• Central venous catheter and dialysis catheter placement
• Arterial line insertion and intra-aortic balloon pump familiarity
• Chest tube insertion and thoracentesis
• Bypass conduit vascular tissue retrieval and endoscopic retrieval techniques
• Operating Room (OR) workflow, sterile technique, and surgical teamwork
• Epic EMR navigation and documentation
• Robotic surgery exposure (preferred but not required)
• Strong communication and urgent/critical thinking skills for acute surgical care
