Roles & Responsibilities

• First-assist in cardiothoracic procedures including CABG, AVR, MVR, thoracotomy, and lung resections
• Provide perioperative care in the OR and support surgeons during complex cases
• Perform procedural duties such as chest tube placement and vein harvest with competency
• Manage post-op patients on telemetry and in the ICU with attentive monitoring and timely interventions
• Conduct inpatient rounds, triage urgent issues, and coordinate seamless handoffs during weekend coverage
• Respond to call duties (1-2 days/week and designated weekend coverage) and provide procedural support as needed
• Document thoroughly and timely in Epic to support continuity of care and billing requirements
• Collaborate with the surgical team and ancillary staff to ensure excellent patient outcomes

Qualifications

• Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) or equivalent certification — must be able to perform first assist duties
• Active Kentucky state license required
• Proven experience first-assisting in CABG, AVR, MVR and thoracotomy/lung resection cases
• Procedural competency in chest tube placement and vein harvest
• Comfort and experience working in inpatient, OR, telemetry, and ICU settings
• Ability to obtain or provide proof of malpractice coverage as required
• Willingness and ability to credential at Saint Joseph Hospital (credentialing timeframe ~90-110 days)
• PRN/contract/travel experience is a plus

Education

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program and national certification (PA-C) preferred

• Cardiothoracic surgery first-assist techniques

• Telemetry monitoring and critical care/ICU management
• Operating room workflow and sterile technique
