Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert labor and delivery nursing care, including active delivery support at a 1:1 ratio
• Deliver mother-baby/couplet care on the postpartum unit with safe, evidence-based practices
• Perform admission, assessment, and continuous fetal monitoring using Advanced AWHONN AFM standards
• Collaborate with OB, anesthesia, respiratory therapy and pharmacy to coordinate safe care and transfers
• Serve in charge nurse capacity when assigned — managing breaks and unit flow while supporting staff
• Respond swiftly and confidently to maternal and neonatal emergencies, stabilizing and initiating transfers as needed
• Document care accurately in Cerner and maintain clear handoff communication at the bedside
• Precept new staff during unit-specific orientation to maintain continuity and quality of care

Qualifications

• Active RN license (eligible to submit) — license required to submit candidates
• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, STABLE, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)
• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience
• Comfortable functioning independently, especially during night shifts with fewer resources
• Ability to accept charge nurse responsibilities and provide supervisory references (two supervisory references required at submittal; one within 12 months and one within 3 years worked)
• Willingness to work rotating holidays per unit policy (travelers typically work 2 of the 3 major holidays)

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing or Diploma in Nursing accepted (BSN not required)
• Unit-specific orientation: 2-3 days floor preceptorship plus 12 hours common orientation

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficient in Cerner charting and bedside documentation
• Strong fetal heart rate interpretation and advanced fetal monitoring skills
• Mother-baby couplet care and newborn assessment (including IV antibiotics and short-term oxygen support)
• Labor & delivery skillset including active delivery support and team-based delivery staffing
• Emergency response and stabilization for maternal and neonatal events
• Effective communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
