Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead HIM operations for a rural critical access hospital, setting the tone for accurate, timely medical records and coding
• Ensure regulatory compliance and oversee policies to meet federal/state standards and audits
• Oversee and validate medical records and coding processes to maintain data integrity and quality
• Provide hands-on support and mentorship to HIM staff, fostering a collaborative small-team environment
• Implement process improvements that streamline workflows and improve documentation accuracy
• Coordinate with clinical and administrative teams to support patient care and reporting needs
• Monitor metrics and reporting for HIM functions and drive corrective action when needed
• Support day-to-day problem solving in a fast-paced rural setting—lead by example and roll up your sleeves

Qualifications

• Proven HIM leadership experience in a hospital or clinical setting, preferably in a rural or critical access environment
• Strong knowledge of medical records management, coding practices, and regulatory compliance
• Experience supervising and developing staff with a hands-on, supportive approach
• Familiarity with medical coding (ICD-10/CPT) and workflows that ensure data integrity
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across clinical and administrative teams
• Certification such as RHIA or RHIT preferred; other relevant certifications or credentials welcome

Education

• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Knowledge & Skills

• In-depth knowledge of Health Information Management operations and best practices
• Medical records lifecycle management and secure information handling (HIPAA awareness)
• Medical coding accuracy and auditing (ICD-10, CPT principles)
• Regulatory compliance familiarity (state/federal healthcare documentation standards)
• Strong data integrity, reporting, and quality assurance abilities
• Leadership, team supervision, and staff development skills
• Comfort with EHR systems and health information workflows
• Adaptability to work in a small, fast-paced rural hospital environment
