Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform grossing of surgical pathology specimens accurately and efficiently, ensuring proper fixation and documentation
• Embed, section (microtomy), and prepare high-quality paraffin and frozen sections for diagnostic review
• Run and troubleshoot automated and manual immunohistochemistry and special stains, maintaining quality controls
• Prepare slides, perform staining procedures (H&E, PAS, Giemsa, special stains) and mount slides for pathologist interpretation
• Process tissues using automated tissue processors and follow decalcification and special processing protocols as needed
• Prepare cytology specimens including ThinPrep, cell blocks, and cytospins when required
• Document and chart using Epic (preferred) and adhere to hospital lab safety and compliance standards
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary support (phlebotomy, radiology) to ensure timely specimen handling and patient care

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years experience required with demonstrated grossing experience (HARDSTOP)
• Hospital clinical laboratory experience required
• California state histology/clinical lab license preferred; pending license accepted
• ASCP-HT certification preferred (or equivalent)
• Associate's Degree in a science field preferred
• Comfortable working night shifts and the listed schedule (Saturday-Thursday or assignment schedule)
• First-time travelers considered only if they have strong experience and more than 10 years of experience

Knowledge & Skills

• Grossing, fixation techniques and handling a wide variety of surgical specimens
• Embedding and advanced microtomy (paraffin and frozen sections, precision microtomy)
• Automated and manual immunohistochemistry and special stains
• Tissue processing including decalcification, microwave processing, and GI processing schedules
• Staining expertise: H&E, PAS, Giemsa, cytoplasmic and nuclear stains, artifact identification
• Cytology skills: ThinPrep, cell block prep, cytospin and gyn specimen handling
• Familiarity with Epic charting system (preferred) and routine hospital anatomic pathology workflows
• Ability to follow strict protocols, maintain quality control, and work independently on night shift
