Roles & Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens promptly and accurately using venipuncture, arterial and capillary techniques
• Verify patient identification prior to collection to ensure accurate testing
• Prepare, label and preserve specimens for processing and reference lab testing with meticulous attention to detail
• Perform bedside glucose testing and adhere to quality control procedures before releasing results
• Instruct and assist patients with urine and other specimen collections, maintaining patient comfort and dignity
• Maintain organized collection areas, supplies and equipment to support safe, efficient workflows
• Communicate clearly and courteously with patients, nursing staff and laboratory personnel about collection timing and specimen needs
• Assist with report distribution, glassware washing and other lab support tasks as requested
• Follow safety, infection control and quality assurance procedures to meet CLIA/JCAHO/CAP and state standards
• Escalate issues to supervisors and suggest improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent training
• Certified Phlebotomist (ASCP, AMT, CLSI or equivalent) required
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification (renew every two years)
• Hospital laboratory phlebotomy experience preferred
• Comfortable with venipuncture, arterial and capillary collection techniques
• Ability to work weekends, holidays and rotating shifts as required
• Strong communication skills, professional bedside manner and maturity of judgment

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

• Phlebotomy, venipuncture, arterial and capillary puncture
• Specimen collection, labeling, preservation and transport best practices
• Patient identification and bedside patient communication
• Quality assurance and infection control procedures
• Familiarity with CLIA, JCAHO and CAP standards
• Specimen preparation for reference laboratories and accurate requisition completion
• Inventory management, glassware washing and basic lab supply handling
• Ability to follow protocols, document carefully and escalate concerns appropriately
