Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to patients of all ages in the Emergency Department
- Perform thorough patient assessments, interpret findings, and develop/implement individualized nursing care plans
- Administer medications and therapeutics accurately while monitoring patient responses
- Respond calmly and decisively in emergent situations and initiate life-saving interventions when needed
- Document assessments, interventions and patient progress clearly and completely in the medical record
- Delegate and supervise CNA/Tech staff to ensure safe and efficient patient care
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care and transitions
- Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatments and aftercare to promote positive outcomes
- Participate in unit meetings, quality improvement initiatives and ongoing competency validation
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state required (Direct hire applicants must have applied for an Alaska license before start date; agency staff must have an active Alaska license)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
- ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- Clinical Competency and High Risk Competency to be completed within specified timeframes (per employer policy)
- High school diploma or equivalent required; previous specialty or ED experience preferred (1 year clinical experience preferred)
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Active RN license required (Alaska or other U.S. state)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong patient assessment and triage skills across pediatric, adult and geriatric populations
- Medication administration and knowledge of common pharmaceuticals and their effects
- Proficiency with emergency equipment: defibrillators, EKG monitors, ventilators and specialty sets
- Skills in emergency procedures and interventions (intubation assistance, arterial line setup, chest tube prep, ABG collection)
- Excellent documentation, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
- Ability to lead, delegate and mentor staff while maintaining accountability for patient care
