Shift Type: Variable shifts: 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts; Days, Evenings, Nights, and Weekends/Holidays. On-call 0-3 times per month (8-hour night shifts and 24-hour weekend/holiday coverage). Specific start and end times vary by unit and schedule.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate post-anesthesia care for patients in Phase I and Phase II recovery
• Assess and monitor patients’ vital signs, incision sites, and overall stability closely
• Deliver critical care interventions when needed and escalate concerns to anesthesiology and surgical teams
• Manage and operate unit equipment such as PCA pumps, Braun IV pumps, Pyxis, Cryocuff, SCDs, Bair PAWS warmers, and HP/Philips monitors
• Perform thorough patient assessments and document changes to ensure safe transitions of care
• Educate patients and families about post-op care, pain management, and recovery expectations
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes in a fast-paced PACU environment

Qualifications

• Current Hawaii RN license required by the start of the assignment (travelers must apply upon acceptance if not yet licensed)
• Minimum 2+ years’ experience as a critical care RN (ER or ICU experience may be accepted as a substitute for PACU experience)
• Valid BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association
• PALS from the American Heart Association recommended and may be required for some roles
• Other specialty credentials (NIHSS, TNCC) preferred and may be required for certain assignments
• Proof of flu vaccination or an approved medical/religious exemption required prior to contract start

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong post-operative and critical care nursing skills including Phase I and Phase II recovery
• Solid knowledge of anesthesiology principles and post-anesthesia patient management
• Excellent patient assessment and monitoring abilities, including incision site and temperature checks
• Experience with Meditech electronic health record workflows
• Familiarity operating PCA pumps, Braun IV pumps, Pyxis systems, Cryocuff, SCDs, and Bair PAWS warmers
• Proficient with HP and Philips patient monitoring systems
• Ability to think critically and act quickly in rapidly changing clinical situations
• Surgical nursing and pediatric experience are a plus
