Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform routine and complex laboratory testing across hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, urinalysis, coagulation, and serology
• Analyze, verify, and report accurate test results and escalate critical values promptly to support patient care
• Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as needed, ensuring specimen integrity and proper documentation
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on laboratory instrumentation to minimize downtime
• Perform and document quality control procedures to maintain regulatory compliance and testing accuracy
• Use the Laboratory Information System (Cerner/LIS) to document results and manage workflow
• Work independently while supporting a collaborative team in a rural Critical Access Hospital environment
• Float within scope as needed to cover essential lab functions and ensure continuous patient services

Qualifications

• Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field with completed clinical training
• ASCP (MLS/MT) or AMT certification required
• AHA BLS certification required
• Minimum 2+ years of recent hospital laboratory experience (strong generalist background)
• Cerner EHR/LIS experience required
• Previous Critical Access Hospital experience preferred
• Comfortable working independently and adapting to a rural healthcare setting
• Phlebotomy experience and ability to float within lab scope

Education

• Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field with completed clinical training (required)

Knowledge & Skills

• Proven skills in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, urinalysis, coagulation, and serology
• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Cerner documentation
• Strong quality control, troubleshooting, and instrument maintenance abilities
• Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving under minimal supervision
• Specimen processing and chain-of-custody best practices
• Ability to communicate results clearly and work collaboratively with clinical teams
• Adaptability to rural hospital workflows and flexible weekend coverage
