Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate, evidence-based care to laboring patients and newborns throughout labor, delivery and immediate postpartum
- Monitor maternal and fetal status using fetal monitoring and clinical assessment tools to ensure safe outcomes
- Assist with deliveries and emergent interventions, collaborating closely with physicians, midwives and the care team
- Educate and support families—explain procedures, answer questions, and empower parents in the birthing process
- Document assessments, interventions and patient responses accurately and promptly in the medical record
- Respond quickly to obstetric emergencies with calm, decisive action and skilled clinical technique
- Coordinate patient care across shifts and disciplines to ensure smooth transitions and continuity
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (ability to practice in Tennessee or eligible for TN licensure)
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience (Labor & Delivery experience required/preferred)
- Current BLS required; Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and obstetric-focused certifications (RNC-OB) preferred
- Comfortable and experienced with 12-hour night shifts and acute obstetric care
- Strong clinical judgment, excellent communication, and teamwork skills
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in fetal monitoring interpretation and maternal/fetal assessment
- Skilled in labor support techniques, delivery assistance, and newborn stabilization
- Competent with IV therapy, medication administration, and emergency response in OB settings
- Accurate clinical documentation and familiarity with electronic medical record systems
- Excellent patient education, family-centered care, and collaborative teamwork abilities
