Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide clear, accurate ASL interpretation for students, staff, and families in K-12 settings
- Collaborate with teachers and support staff to facilitate inclusive classroom communication
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson plans and educational materials
- Support students during small group instruction, assessments, and school events
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to school district policies and ethical standards
- Participate in team meetings and communicate student needs and progress effectively
Qualifications
- Fluent in American Sign Language with demonstrated interpreting experience
- Preferred: National or state interpreting certification (for example, RID credentials)
- Experience working in educational settings or with children/teens is highly valued
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet school district clearance requirements
- Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with educators and families
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor degree in Deaf Studies, ASL Interpretation, Education, or related field preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Depth of ASL knowledge and best practices in educational interpretation
- Familiarity with K-12 classroom routines, terminology, and instructional approaches
- Skilled at sight translation, consecutive interpreting, and interactive interpreting
- Cultural competence and the ability to support Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
- Time management, preparation skills, and a calm, student-centered approach
