Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform utilization review and case management activities using InterQual to determine medical necessity
• Conduct concurrent, retrospective and continued stay reviews to support appropriate patient care
• Document thorough, compliant clinical notes and decisions in Epic
• Coordinate prior authorizations, precertifications and care transitions across care teams
• Apply CMS, DRG, CPT coding and HIPAA guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and external payors (HMOs, IPAs) to optimize patient care and utilization
• Support centralized UM operations and rotate between service lines and facilities as assigned
• Maintain clear communication with clinicians, patients and payors to facilitate timely care decisions

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years acute medical Care Management / Utilization Management experience in a hospital setting (not health plan/medical group)
• Proficient with Epic — recent use required within the last 6-12 months
• InterQual experience required (Hardstop)
• Experience with Medicare regulations and UM processes (e.g., CC44s, ABNs, HINNs, MCSNs)
• Knowledge of CPT coding and billing, DRG principles, and CMS guidelines
• Familiarity with CA and Medi-Cal processes and compliance is a plus
• Comfort working a rotating schedule and supporting multiple facilities; must work Pacific Standard Time

• Epic charting and documentation proficiency
• Concurrent, retrospective and prior authorization review workflows
• Medical necessity determination using evidence-based guidelines
• CPT coding, DRG, CMS regulations and HIPAA compliance
• Remote UR work experience and comfort with centralized/restricted workflows
• Pediatrics and ICU exposure are desirable specialties
