Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert PCU/neuro stepdown nursing care to adult and geriatric patients, delivering compassionate, patient-centered treatment
• Monitor and manage complex neurological patients, including EVD monitoring and lumbar drain management
• Perform NIHSS assessments and escalate stroke-related concerns promptly according to hard-stop requirements
• Manage cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation, and participate in rapid response/code teams when called
• Administer and titrate infusions and follow protocols for IV insulin, heparin, and cardiac drips as required
• Provide advanced airway and respiratory support such as HFNC, CPAP/BIPAP, and tracheostomy care
• Maintain central and peripheral line care, perform phlebotomy and blood product administration safely
• Document patient care accurately in EPIC and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for optimal outcomes

Qualifications

• Active RN license valid for practice in Ohio
• Minimum 2 years of PCU/Med-Surg or Neuro Stepdown nursing experience required
• ACLS and BLS required; NIHSS certification required (NIHSS is a hard stop — must have and be able to demonstrate)
• EPIC charting experience required
• Experience with EVD monitoring and neuro-critical care strongly required
• Previous travel experience preferred; charge experience and teaching hospital experience are a plus
• Comfort with floating to different units within the OSU organization

Knowledge & Skills

• EVD monitoring and intracranial bleed/post-op neurosurgery care
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) assessment and stroke recognition
• Telemetry and dysrhythmia interpretation
• IV/central line management, phlebotomy and blood product administration
• IV insulin protocol management and insulin drip titration
• Arterial line care, PCA and titratable cardiac drip familiarity
• Respiratory support: HFNC, CPAP/BIPAP, tracheostomy care
• Epic electronic health record proficiency
• Rapid response and code team participation
• Isolation precautions and interdisciplinary communication
