Shift Type: Primarily day shifts with rotation to evening shifts; 8-hour shifts; weekend and holiday coverage may be required; rotating schedule (day/evening) based on departmental needs

Candidate Pay Rate: $36 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens accurately using venipuncture, arterial and capillary punctures while following established laboratory procedures
- Verify patient identification before every collection to ensure testing accuracy and patient safety
- Perform bedside glucose testing and adhere strictly to quality control standards before releasing results
- Prepare, label, and deliver specimens to the correct departments, ensuring proper preservation and documentation
- Instruct and assist patients with urine and other non-blood specimen collections, including chain-of-custody procedures when required
- Maintain clean, organized collection areas and ensure supplies and equipment are stocked and functioning
- Communicate clearly and courteously with patients, clinical staff, and supervisors about delays, specimen issues, or special needs
- Support quality assurance and infection control practices to meet regulatory standards (CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, Pennsylvania Dept. of Health)
Qualifications
- Certified Phlebotomist (ASCP, AMT, CLSI or equivalent) — certification required
- Current BLS for Healthcare Provider (meets AHA standards) and renews every two years
- Graduate of a certified phlebotomy program or equivalent training
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: prior hospital laboratory or clinical phlebotomy experience
- Strong communication skills and the ability to make mature, patient-focused judgments
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays and rotating shifts as assigned
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of a certified phlebotomy program or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
- Venipuncture, arterial puncture and capillary puncture techniques
- Specimen collection, handling, labeling and transport best practices
- Infection control, quality control and quality assurance procedures
- Bedside glucose testing and documentation of results
- Chain-of-custody specimen collection procedures
- Patient identification procedures and patient communication skills
- Inventory management and basic lab equipment care
- Familiarity with regulatory standards (CAP, JCAHO, CLIA) and hospital policies
