Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room and specialty equipment for open heart procedures, ensuring everything is sterile and ready
• Assist surgeons by passing instruments and anticipating surgical needs during cases
• Position and transfer patients safely to prevent injury and support optimal surgical access
• Participate actively in physician-led time-outs and team briefings to ensure patient safety
• Initiate and assist with emergency procedures, including providing BLS when needed
• Maintain HIPAA-compliant handling of patient information and protect patient privacy
• Contribute to quality improvement efforts using Six Sigma methodologies and unit initiatives
• Complete annual competencies and participate in continuing education to maintain clinical excellence

Qualifications

• Must have demonstrable Open Heart surgical experience (required)
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required
• Current CPR/BLS certification required
• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program
• Previous OR experience preferred, with experience in both ambulatory and inpatient settings a plus
• Ability to handle physically demanding tasks, including frequent lifting and equipment handling
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced surgical teams

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program (required)

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and instrument passing proficiency
• Operating Room (OR) workflow and specialty cardiac surgery equipment
• Patient transfer, positioning, and safety practices
• BLS/CPR and emergency response knowledge
• Familiarity with AIDET, TeamSTEPPS and Six Sigma approaches to quality and communication
• HIPAA compliance and respectful handling of patient information
• Problem-solving, time management and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
