Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide focused 1:1 labor support including monitoring, comfort measures, coaching, and documentation
• Manage post-C-section and peri-operative nursing care from recovery through discharge
• Interpret and document electronic fetal heart monitoring using current NICHD terminology and perform NSTs
• Stabilize high-risk maternal and neonatal patients and coordinate safe transfer to higher-level care when needed
• Respond calmly and decisively to emergencies, including fetal distress and C-sections
• Supervise and delegate to CNA/LPN/tech staff, ensuring safe and efficient unit functioning
• Educate patients and families — teach discharge plans, breastfeeding support, and newborn care
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team to develop and update individualized care plans
• Complete accurate nursing documentation and maintain confidentiality at all times
• Participate in unit initiatives, in-services, and ongoing competency validation

Qualifications

• Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Direct hire must have applied for an Alaska license before start date; agency staff must have an active Alaska license)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required on hire
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required — may be completed within 6 months if not current at hire
• One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior Labor & Delivery/OB experience preferred
• Comfort with peri-operative care, triage, medication administration, and delegation/supervisory responsibilities
• Ability to work on-call, holidays, and respond to urgent situations with sound clinical judgment

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required

Knowledge & Skills

• Patient assessment, clinical decision-making, and nursing documentation expertise
• Electronic fetal heart monitoring and NST interpretation using NICHD terminology
• Experience with labor support, postpartum care, newborn/neonatal care, and C-section/post-op nursing
• Proficiency in emergency response, ACLS/PALS/NRP protocols, and neonatal stabilization
• Infection control practices and safe medication administration
• Strong communication, patient education, and teamwork skills
• Familiarity with bedside OB procedures and ACOG standards of care
• Ability to operate basic and specialized medical equipment (defibrillator, EKG, suction, etc.)
