Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert post-operative care for open-heart and other surgical patients, ensuring safe recovery during the critical stepdown period
• Monitor cardiac status closely, interpret telemetry and vital trends, and escalate changes quickly to the care team
• Administer medications and treatments accurately and on time, following protocols and physician orders
• Perform thorough assessments and document findings clearly to support continuity of care
• Collaborate with surgeons, cardiology, anesthesia, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver coordinated care plans
• Educate patients and families about recovery expectations, wound care, activity progression, and discharge planning
• Support quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with unit policies and safety standards

Qualifications

• Active RN license (Nursys verification documented)
• BLS certification required
• NIHSS and DCI/BVP certifications required as noted
• Clinical experience in surgical stepdown, post-operative cardiac care, or similar progressive care settings preferred
• Ability to work night shifts and the required every-other-weekend rotation
• Successful completion of facility onboarding checks: Prime exams, skills checklist, 10-panel drug screen, TB screening, fit test, and required immunizations

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong knowledge of post-operative cardiac care and stepdown unit workflows
• Proficiency with cardiac monitoring, telemetry interpretation, and rhythm recognition
• Medication administration and titration experience in cardiac/post-op patients
• Excellent assessment, critical thinking, and prioritization skills in higher-acuity settings
• Clear communication and teamwork with multidisciplinary clinicians and families
• Familiarity with clinical documentation and hospital policies for surgical/post-op care
