Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform complete echocardiogram studies ordered by physicians, including Transthoracic 2-D, M-Mode, Color-flow Doppler, Transesophageal, exercise stress and pharmacological echocardiography
• Conduct other cardiac diagnostic studies as assigned: EKG, Holter prep/monitoring/analysis, and cardiac stress tests
• Operate and optimize diagnostic equipment—echocardiographs, cardiac stress systems, electrocardiographs and Holter monitors—and perform computer analysis to provide clear diagnostic information
• Use hospital information systems to schedule, process and ensure correct charging of studies
• Implement infection control practices and apply aseptic techniques and proper equipment disinfection
• Serve as a professional resource to physicians, nursing staff and other hospital personnel
• Provide age-specific patient care, including neonatal and pediatric echocardiography, and offer clinical preceptorship/guidance to students from contracted programs

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required
• Successful completion of an echocardiography certification program and/or a minimum of two years hands-on echocardiography experience
• Preferred: Cardiovascular Sonography certificate or completion of a formal certificate program
• Preferred: Extensive hospital-based experience and experience with pediatric and neonatal echocardiography

Education

• High School Diploma or GED (required)
• Completion of an echocardiography certification program (required or equivalent experience)
• Cardiovascular Sonography certificate (preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Transthoracic echocardiography (2-D, M-Mode, Doppler)
• Transesophageal echocardiography
• Stress echocardiography and cardiac stress testing
• EKG/electrocardiography
• Holter monitoring preparation, monitoring and analysis
• Operation and troubleshooting of echocardiograph and cardiac diagnostic equipment
• Use of cardiac stress systems and computer-based analysis tools
• Familiarity with hospital information systems for scheduling and billing
• Infection control practices and aseptic technique
• Age-specific care for neonatal and pediatric patients
