Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the behavioral health unit’s day-to-day operations in collaboration with the Director
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors and staff to foster a respectful care environment
• Implement and enforce hospital policies, regulatory codes and standards (NYSDOH, JCAHO, DOHMH, OMH, ACS)
• Coordinate interdisciplinary performance improvement activities and utilize benchmarks to drive quality
• Assemble and prepare clinical and regulatory reports required by state and city agencies
• Oversee admissions, discharges and discharge planning to ensure appropriate clinical management
• Manage budgeting, supply and inventory maintenance for efficient unit operations
• Provide operational leadership around the clock and administrative coverage as needed
• Promote best practices, continuing education and innovation to improve patient care outcomes

Qualifications

• Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in New York State (required)
• Minimum five (5) years as a Registered Nurse
• Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in psychiatry
• Minimum two (2) years in a leadership role; experience managing a psychiatric unit in a hospital is a must
• BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Crisis management certifications (PMCS, TRUST) required
• Previous experience working with children (ages 6 weeks to 6 years) with at least two (2) years formal experience
• Strong decision-making, problem-solving and communication skills

Education

• BSN from an accredited nursing school (required)
• Master’s Degree in Nursing (preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Clinical expertise in psychiatric nursing and inpatient behavioral health operations
• Quality improvement methods (CQI), Root Cause Analysis and performance improvement tools
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements (NYSDOH, JCAHO, DOHMH, OMH, ACS)
• Leadership, budgetary and administrative management skills
• Critical thinking, math and strong computer literacy
• Experience with electronic health records, healthcare and billing systems
• Team-oriented with excellent oral communication and professional demeanor
