Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams and Separation Health Assessments with compassion and professionalism
- Conduct thorough interview-based evaluations and targeted physical assessments (range of motion and muscle strength testing)
- Document clear, timely exam reports and complete required addendums and medical opinions
- Adhere strictly to a non-treatment exam role — focus on objective assessment and documentation
- Coordinate with scheduling and administrative teams to ensure on-time appointments and reporting
- Maintain confidentiality and veteran-centered communication throughout each encounter
- Complete required training and follow agency practice description and protocols
Qualifications
- Active Nurse Practitioner (NP) credential — ability to practice in Indiana (state licensure required or eligibility to obtain it)
- Clinical background in general medicine; specialties welcomed: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery
- Experience with or willingness to learn Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams and separation assessments
- Access to a private office within a 50-mile radius of the listed site OR ability to work at a VES facility within 50 miles
- Strong clinical documentation skills and ability to complete required administrative follow-up
- Comfort with focused, non-treatment medicolegal evaluations and clear, objective reporting
- Successful completion of the required onboarding and training prior to patient encounters
Education
- Nurse Practitioner degree (MSN or DNP) and NP certification — appropriate for the NP role
Knowledge & Skills
- Skilled in interview-based examinations and focused history-taking
- Proficient with range of motion testing and muscle strength assessments
- Excellent medical documentation and report-writing abilities
- Familiarity with disability evaluations, medicolegal principles, and objective assessment techniques
- Strong interpersonal skills for respectful Veteran interactions
- Ability to manage time efficiently during half-day or full-day clinic blocks
- Comfort learning and using client portals and required administrative systems
