Roles & Responsibilities

• Screen, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, cognition, and swallowing disorders.
• Provide professional consultation to the interdisciplinary care team to support safe, timely discharges.
• Perform instrumental swallowing evaluations and treatments including FEES and MBSImP where appropriate.
• Operate and troubleshoot augmentative communication devices and therapeutic tools (vitalStim, electrolarynx, endoscope).
• Document evaluations, treatment plans, progress, and discharge recommendations clearly and promptly.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, collaborate with physicians, nurses, case managers, and therapists to coordinate care.
• Adhere to safety and infection-control practices given frequent exposure to oral/respiratory secretions and high-acuity patients.

Qualifications

• Current Hawaii State license as a Speech-Language Pathologist (required)
• Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP) (required)
• Current BLS/HCP CPR certification (required)
• Completion of a FEES course prior to hire or willingness to complete within six (6) months of hire
• Preferred: Minimum of 1 year acute care SLP experience and prior FEES clinical experience
• Preferred: MBSImP experience and proficiency in adult swallowing and cognitive-communication evaluation/treatment

Education

• Credentials consistent with ASHA requirements for SLP practice (master's or higher in Speech-Language Pathology is typical)
• Required: Hawaii State SLP license; ASHA certification (CCC-SLP)
• Required: BLS/HCP CPR certification; FEES course completion or completion within 6 months of hire

Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise in dysphagia assessment and management (clinical and instrumental)
• Skilled in cognitive-communication assessment and treatment
• Experience with augmentative and alternative communication strategies and devices
• Familiarity with FEES and MBSImP protocols
• Comfortable using therapeutic equipment including vitalStim, electrolarynx, endoscope, and suction
• Strong interdisciplinary collaboration, documentation, and patient-family communication skills
