Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate pre-operative nursing care to pediatric patients, ensuring safety and comfort
• Perform thorough pre-op assessments, document findings, and communicate concerns to the surgical team
• Educate patients and families about procedures, fasting instructions, and what to expect — explain things in kid-friendly language
• Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative staff to coordinate care
• Prepare patients for surgery, including IV starts and medication administration per protocol
• Maintain strict adherence to infection control and patient safety standards
• Participate in orientation, mentoring, and unit-based quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license — MA licensure required or compact state eligibility as applicable
• Experience in pediatric nursing and pre-operative/perioperative care preferred
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; PALS preferred
• Strong clinical assessment, IV, and medication administration skills
• Ability to pass required credentialing, background checks, and immunization requirements
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills; comfortable working with children and their families

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Active RN license in the state of Massachusetts

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of pediatric anatomy, growth and development, and family-centered care
• Familiarity with pre-op assessment protocols and perioperative safety practices
• Skill in performing IV starts, medication administration, and patient education
• Ability to document clearly and accurately in electronic medical records
• Strong interpersonal skills for working with multidisciplinary teams and anxious families
