Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist the surgical team by preparing the OR and ensuring sterile technique for cardiac open heart procedures
• Scrub for CVOR/open heart cases and provide expert instrument handling and passing
• Anticipate surgeon and team needs to maintain an efficient, safe operative environment
• Provide perioperative patient care for all ages — pediatric through geriatric
• Assist RN circulator with patient positioning, prepping, and intraoperative support
• Maintain and troubleshoot surgical instrumentation and devices, ensuring readiness
• Participate in room turnover, decontamination, and documentation to support smooth workflow
• Respond to call assignments and provide reliable coverage during rotating weekends

Qualifications

• Current certification to practice surgical technology in Oregon (required)
• Healthcare Provider BLS (required)
• One (1) year scrubbing CVOR/Open Heart experience OR two (2) years acute care scrubbing experience
• Successful completion of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP/ABHES) or military surgical technologist training accepted
• Completion of 16 hours continuing education every two years relevant to surgical technology, per options listed
• Comfortable with patient populations across lifespans: pediatrics to geriatrics
• Basic computer application skills preferred for documentation and charting

Education

• Option 1: Military surgical technologist training (Armed Forces/USPHS) accepted
• Option 2: Completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited surgical technology program
• Option 3: Equivalent practice experience (e.g., 2+ years practice between Jan 1, 2014 and Jan 1, 2017) with required continuing education

Knowledge & Skills

• Cardiac/open heart surgical instrumentation and procedures
• Sterile technique, scrub duties, and operating room protocols
• Perioperative patient safety, positioning, and infection control
• Ability to work under RN direction and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
• Familiarity with CVOR workflows and device handling
• Basic computer literacy for case documentation and communication
