Roles & Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver meaningful recreational therapy programs that support mental health recovery and daily functioning
• Assess individual patient needs and strengths to create personalized treatment goals
• Lead group and individual activities that promote social skills, coping strategies, and community reintegration
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and track patient progress
• Document interventions, outcomes, and treatment plans clearly and timely
• Ensure a safe, therapeutic environment and follow institutional safety and security protocols
• Provide education and support to patients and families to encourage continued progress

Qualifications

• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent recreational therapy credential preferred
• State licensure or certification in Recreational Therapy if required by California regulations
• Experience working in mental health or correctional settings is highly desirable
• Strong clinical assessment and activity-planning skills with evidence of measurable patient outcomes
• Clear background check and ability to work in a correctional facility environment
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and documentation skills

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of therapeutic recreation modalities and evidence-based interventions
• Ability to design group programming focused on socialization, coping skills, and life skills
• Familiarity with mental health diagnoses and treatment principles
• Proficient documentation and outcome measurement skills
• Comfort working within structured security procedures and interdisciplinary teams
• Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
