Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons as First Assistant in a wide range of cases including craniotomy, spine fusion, liver resection, whipple, MAKO total joint and complex orthopedic trauma
- Collaborate closely with circulator, scrub techs and surgical team to ensure safe, efficient operative flow
- Perform hands-on patient care in the OR setting, maintaining sterile technique and patient safety throughout procedures
- Document operative details and patient care accurately in Meditech
- Support unit readiness by ensuring OR equipment is set, sterile supplies are available, and turnover is smooth
- Participate in rotating call schedule to provide timely surgical assistance when needed
Qualifications
- Licensed First Assistant (FA) with Board of Medicine authorization in Virginia required
- Proven proficiency with Orthopedic procedures, Da Vinci robotic assistance and neurosurgical cases
- Experience with orthopedic trauma and MAKO total joint procedures strongly preferred
- Comfortable working 10-hour shifts and participating in rotating weekday and weekend call
- Current BLS required, ACLS and other advanced certifications preferred or encouraged
Education
- Licensed First Assistant (FA) with VA Board of Medicine
- Formal training or certification as a surgical first assistant, surgical tech, RNFA, PA-C or equivalent experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of OR equipment and sterile processing
- Experience using Meditech or similar electronic documentation systems
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary surgical teams
- Skilled in surgical instrumentation, retraction, suturing and intraoperative decision support
- Excellent communication and situational awareness in high-acuity settings
