Roles & Responsibilities
- Follow hospital policies and procedures to keep patients and team members safe
- Clean, inspect, and prepare surgical instruments and trays for sterilization
- Perform sterilization processes and monitor sterilizer cycles to ensure effectiveness
- Transport soiled and sterile instruments to and from the operating room promptly and accurately
- Maintain competency records and participate in on-going training to stay sharp
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with OR staff, supervisors, and coworkers to coordinate instrument needs
- Assist with inventory control, restocking, and quality assurance checks
- Take on other duties as assigned by the SPD Supervisor, charge technician, or Director
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous sterile processing experience preferred; new grads who are eager to learn are welcome
- BLS required within three months of hire
- CSPDT certification encouraged to be obtained within 18 months of hire
- Strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and ability to follow protocols
- Ability to stand for extended periods and handle routine lifting associated with SPD tasks
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Sterile processing certificate or technical training preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Sterile processing workflows and instrumentation preparation
- Sterilization methods and infection control principles
- Instrument identification and basic instrumentation handling
- Familiarity with hospital policies and procedures
- Clear verbal communication and teamwork
- Basic documentation and record-keeping for competency and sterilization logs
- Time management and ability to prioritize urgent OR needs
