Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide focused 1:1 labor support and skilled obstetric nursing care during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum stages
• Monitor, interpret and document electronic fetal heart rate tracings using current NICHD terminology and perform scheduled non-stress tests
• Deliver total peri-operative nursing care for C-section patients from post-surgical recovery through discharge
• Perform newborn well-baby checks and provide breastfeeding support and education to families
• Stabilize high-risk maternal or neonatal patients and coordinate safe transfers to tertiary care when needed
• Act calmly and decisively in emergencies (including fetal distress and C-sections) and follow established protocols
• Delegate and supervise CNAs/LPNs/techs, ensuring high-quality, safe patient care
• Document care accurately, communicate clearly with the interdisciplinary team, and participate in unit quality improvement and education activities

Qualifications

• Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska — direct hires must have applied for Alaska licensure before start; agency staff must hold an active Alaska license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required on hire; ACLS, PALS and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required — may be obtained within six months of hire if not current on start
• One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior OB/Labor & Delivery experience is preferred
• Demonstrated ability to perform electronic fetal monitoring and NSTs, and to provide peri-operative/post-surgical care

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Active Registered Nurse licensure (Alaska or applied-for prior to start) — nursing program completion required to hold RN license

Knowledge & Skills

• Patient assessment and clinical decision making across maternal and neonatal populations
• Medication administration and safe documentation/charting practices
• Infection control and standard nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation)
• Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring (NICHD terminology) and non-stress test competency
• Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP), ACLS, PALS and BLS skills
• Effective communication, teamwork and the ability to supervise and delegate
• Peri-operative nursing skills and experience with post-C-section care
• Breastfeeding support and patient education abilities
