Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate psychiatric nursing care to geriatric patients (60+), honoring dignity and promoting comfort
• Assess and monitor mental and physical status, recognizing subtle changes common in older adults
• Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the care team
• Administer medications safely and monitor responses, including psychotropic therapies
• Perform risk assessments and employ de-escalation and safety-focused interventions when needed
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient progress clearly and timely in the medical record
• Educate patients and families about conditions, treatments, and discharge planning to support continuity of care
• Collaborate closely with physicians, social workers, therapists, and support staff to deliver coordinated short-term acute care

Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in California (or eligible for appropriate licensure)
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; psychiatric nursing certifications (PMH-BC) or ACLS a plus
• Clinical experience or strong interest in geriatric and psychiatric nursing preferred
• Comfort working in a short-term, 10-bed acute psychiatric setting with older adults
• Strong communication, observation, and de-escalation skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and support patient- and family-centered care

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — BSN preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of geriatric mental health conditions (depression, dementia-related behaviors, late-life psychosis)
• Familiarity with psychopharmacology and safe medication administration for older adults
• Skill in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and behavioral management
• Experience with electronic medical records and clear clinical documentation
• Ability to provide compassionate patient education and family support
• Strong teamwork and communication skills in a fast-paced acute care setting
