Roles & Responsibilities
- Manage ventilated adult patients with excellence, including ventilator setup, adjustments, and troubleshooting
- Perform advanced airway management and suctioning to maintain patient safety and airway patency
- Provide tracheostomy care and management, including humidification and suctioning protocols
- Deliver and titrate oxygen therapy and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) according to patient need
- Interpret arterial blood gases (ABGs) to guide respiratory and ventilator management decisions
- Administer respiratory medications and manage various delivery systems such as MDI, nebulizers, and aerosol setups
- Operate and troubleshoot GE and Hamilton ventilators and respond to high pressure alarms promptly
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a large academic medical center to optimize patient outcomes
- Support emergency airway interventions in the adult critical care and ED settings when required
- Float between campuses as directed, adapting to different unit layouts and team workflows
Qualifications
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification preferred
- Ohio state respiratory license required (or eligible) and ability to obtain state licensure
- Minimum of 2 years of respiratory therapy experience (adult critical care experience preferred)
- High School Diploma and College Diploma and/or transcripts required
- ACLS and BLS certifications required; CRT certification preferred
- Experience with ventilator management (GE and Hamilton preferred) and mechanical ventilation weaning
- Comfort with airway devices, tracheostomy care, and advanced respiratory interventions
- Flu vaccine required per facility guideline (medical exemptions allowed); COVID-19 vaccine not required
Education
- High School Diploma required
- College diploma and/or transcripts required
- RRT certification preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Ventilator management and modes (GE ventilators, Hamilton ventilators)
- Airway management, suctioning, and extubation skills
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), BiPAP and CPAP management
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs) to guide care
- Medication delivery systems including nebulizers, MDI, medihaler, and aerosol setups
- Troubleshooting high pressure alarms and ventilator alarm management
- Weaning from mechanical ventilation and titration of respiratory support
- Tracheostomy care and management, pulmonary hygiene, and sputum specimen collection
