Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate, professional medical support to patients in the mental health unit — be the steady presence they need
- Take and document vital signs, patient histories, and clinical observations accurately and promptly
- Assist clinicians with mental health assessments, treatment activities, and medication administration as directed
- Maintain clear, timely charting and ensure confidentiality and adherence to facility protocols
- Support patient safety through observation, de-escalation techniques, and reporting of concerns
- Prepare exam rooms, manage supplies, and help maintain a clean, safe clinical environment
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and follow-up
Qualifications
- Current Medical Assistant certification or completed accredited MA program preferred
- BLS/CPR certification required or obtained upon hire
- Experience working in mental health settings or correctional healthcare is strongly preferred
- Ability to pass background checks, security clearance, and required health screenings/immunizations
- Strong communication skills, professionalism, and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Comfortable following strict protocols and documentation standards in a secure facility
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Medical Assistant certificate or diploma preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency taking vitals and performing basic clinical procedures
- Familiarity with medication administration processes and safe handling
- Solid documentation skills and experience with electronic health records (EHR)
- Competence in patient observation, behavioral health awareness, and de-escalation techniques
- Infection control practices and standard precautions
- Teamwork, time management, and the ability to prioritize in a busy clinical environment
