Roles & Responsibilities

• Design and lead therapeutic recreational programs tailored to the mental health needs of participants
• Assess client recreation goals and document progress toward individualized treatment plans
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary mental health and occupational therapy teams to coordinate care
• Provide structured group and individual activities that promote coping skills, socialization, and community reintegration
• Monitor safety during activities and maintain accurate clinical and attendance records
• Adapt interventions to the unique security and operational requirements of a correctional facility
• Participate in orientation and ongoing training to ensure high-quality, compliant care

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related human services field preferred
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or state-recognized recreational therapy credential preferred
• Experience working with mental health populations; experience in correctional or forensic settings is a strong plus
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
• Ability to pass required background checks and facility clearance processes
• Strong documentation skills and familiarity with clinical treatment planning

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of therapeutic recreation modalities and evidence-based interventions for mental health
• Skill in group facilitation, activity planning, and one-on-one therapeutic engagement
• Ability to collaborate effectively with occupational therapy and mental health professionals
• Strong observational and assessment skills with attention to safety and risk management
• Comfort working in a structured correctional environment and following facility protocols
• Clear verbal and written communication skills for documentation and interdisciplinary reporting
