Roles & Responsibilities
- Design and implement engaging therapeutic recreation programs tailored to mental health needs
- Lead group and individual activities that promote socialization, skill-building, and wellbeing
- Assess participants, develop individualized treatment goals, and document progress clearly
- Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary mental health team to coordinate care
- Provide supportive interventions and de-escalation when behavioral challenges arise
- Monitor safety, maintain a therapeutic environment, and follow facility protocols
- Track outcomes, evaluate program effectiveness, and suggest improvements
- Educate participants on coping strategies and healthy leisure choices
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with all documentation standards
Qualifications
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or eligible — certification preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Psychology, or related field (see Education)
- Experience working in mental health settings; experience in correctional or forensic settings is a plus
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to pass background checks and facility security clearances required for HDSP
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and reliable documentation practices
- Demonstrated skill leading groups and developing activity-based treatment plans
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Psychology, or a closely related field; equivalent clinical experience considered
Knowledge & Skills
- Understanding of mental health conditions and therapeutic recreation principles
- Excellent group facilitation and activity planning skills
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
- Good clinical documentation and outcome tracking abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Basic computer literacy and comfort with electronic health records
- Cultural sensitivity and the ability to engage diverse populations
