Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver safe, therapeutic, resident-centered nursing care in a long term care setting
- Perform thorough nursing assessments, document findings, and develop individualized care plans
- Administer medications accurately and monitor resident responses to therapy
- Lead and delegate to CNAs, LPNs, and ward clerks while maintaining accountability for care
- Document care and progress notes in the EHR and ensure accurate shift reports
- Provide patient and family teaching and participate in discharge planning and aftercare coordination
- Apply infection control measures and recognize/respond to changes in resident condition
- Serve as charge nurse when needed, providing leadership and direction for the unit
- Participate in unit meetings, competency checks, and ongoing professional development
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska or another U.S. state required
- Direct hire candidates must have applied for an Alaska nursing license prior to start date; agency staff must hold an active Alaska license
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every three years
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually
- Minimum 1-2 years of nursing experience preferred in a similar care setting
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs and perform the physical demands of the role
- Willingness to take charge nurse responsibilities and float to other units as needed
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing: BSN, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Diploma in Nursing
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Proficiency with EHR documentation and accurate transcription of physician orders
- Competence in medication administration and understanding pharmaceuticals and side effects
- Familiarity with infection control practices and mandatory state reporting guidelines
- Skill in operating basic and specialized medical equipment such as AED
- Excellent oral and written communication to coordinate with residents, families, and the care team
- Leadership and delegation skills to guide CNAs, LPNs, and support staff
- Ability to recognize adverse signs and act promptly in emergency situations
