Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert Labor & Delivery nursing care throughout labor, delivery and immediate postpartum, prioritizing safety and patient-centered comfort
• Perform continuous fetal monitoring (external and internal EFM), recognize abnormal patterns and initiate appropriate interventions
• Assist, scrub and circulate for C-sections and support vaginal deliveries including forceps/vacuum procedures
• Lead neonatal care in the delivery room: APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmer management and cord procedures
• Administer IV therapy and blood products safely, manage infusion pumps and titrate medications per protocol
• Conduct sterile vaginal exams as required (hard-stop competency) and support triage of obstetrical patients
• Provide postpartum education and breastfeeding/lactation support to families during hospital stay
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (Respiratory, Pharmacy, Social Services, Radiology, etc.) and document care in Epic accurately
• Participate in unit readiness including hemorrhage/shock management and high-risk delivery assistance

Qualifications

• Active California RN license required (pending licenses are not accepted)
• BLS and NRP required prior to assignment start
• ACLS and AWHONN (Advanced/Intermediate) strongly preferred
• Minimum ~1 year clinical experience in Labor & Delivery preferred; first-timers/newer grads may be considered
• Comfort and competency with fetal monitoring (external/internal), IUPC and spiral electrode placement
• Ability to float to postpartum and accept weekend rotation (every third weekend)
• Able to complete a 40-hour orientation prior to independent practice at the facility

Knowledge & Skills

• Labor & Delivery management and mother/baby care
• External and internal fetal monitoring (EFM), recognition/treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
• Neonatal resuscitation and newborn assessment (APGAR, thermoregulation, phototherapy)
• C-section support: scrub, assist and circulate skills
• IV therapy, blood product administration and infusion pump management
• Use of Epic for accurate charting and handoffs
• Procedural skills: sterile vaginal exams, IUPC/IUPC calibration, spiral electrode placement, amnioinfusion
• Comfort with obstetrical meds (Pitocin, magnesium sulfate, terbutaline) and managing epidural/general anesthesia care pathways
• Patient/family education and breastfeeding/lactation support
