Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate adult patients to create individualized, evidence-based plans of care
• Conduct bedside swallow evaluations and interpret Modified Barium Swallow Studies confidently
• Implement dysphagia management strategies including Frazier Free Water Protocol and International Dysphagia Diet recommendations
• Modify diet and therapeutic approaches for patients with trach/vent and complex airway needs
• Provide patient and family education to empower safe swallowing and communication strategies
• Document thoroughly in the EHR and manage billing/documentation requirements accurately
• Collaborate with PT, respiratory therapy, nursing, social work, and other team members to optimize patient outcomes
• Deliver treatment for speech, language, cognitive-communication, and voice disorders with compassion and clinical precision
• Support patient safety, recognize signs of abuse, and follow hospital protocols for escalation and reporting
• Serve as a dependable team member in a fast-paced acute care environment, including weekend coverage

Qualifications

• California state SLP license required; pending CA license accepted
• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience; outpatient experience required
• Travel assignment experience required — first time traveler not accepted
• Charting experience in any EHR is required
• BLS preferred
• Comfortable working with tracheostomy/ventilator-dependent patients and performing MBSS

Knowledge & Skills

• Assessment, evaluation, and plan of care development
• Dysphagia management, bedside swallow evaluation, and MBSS (conducting/interpreting)
• Frazier Free Water Protocol and International Dysphagia Diet implementation
• Oral motor techniques, suctioning, and use of thickening agents
• Experience with Passy Muir valves and trach/vent care
• Documentation and billing best practices in acute care
• Use of BIMS and familiarity with WAB for cognitive and aphasia assessment
• Ability to manage complex adult diagnoses including stroke, TBI, degenerative and neurological disorders
• Strong patient/family education and interdisciplinary communication skills
• Flexibility to float and adapt to varying unit needs
