Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform and interpret blood bank testing including ABO/Rh, antibody screen and identification, and AHG crossmatches with accuracy and urgency
• Execute immediate spin and electronic crossmatches and maintain meticulous documentation in Epic
• Lead transfusion reaction workups promptly and collaborate with the clinical team during massive transfusions
• Operate and troubleshoot specialized equipment such as ACL TOP, CellaVision, Sysmex XM and Iris Cell
• Provide reliable coverage across units and float to Providence Mission Laguna when needed
• Maintain compliance with state regulations and facility standards, ensuring patient and staff safety
• Communicate clearly with clinicians, blood suppliers, and transfusion services to coordinate timely patient care

Qualifications

• California State Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license — required
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification — required
• ASCP (or equivalent) certification — preferred
• Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory/blood bank experience (travel experience required)
• Ability to work night shifts and participate in required on-call rotations
• Pending California license not accepted — must have active state license at submission

Education

• BS in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field preferred
• Associate degree with appropriate CLS/MLS certification considered

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong blood bank expertise: ABO/Rh, antibody identification, AHG and immediate spin crossmatch, DAT, indirect Coombs
• Experience with transfusion reaction workups and Rhogam screening
• Familiarity with Epic for charting and lab documentation
• Hands-on experience with ACL TOP, CellaVision, Sysmex XM, Iris Cell, and colorimeters
• Comfort working in a high-acuity trauma hospital with frequent massive transfusions
• Solid teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills under pressure
